VESTIBULAR
Susannah is a physiotherapist with specialist training in the area of vestibular dysfunction. She helps patients overcome dizziness, balance issues, and vestibular disorders. Her treatment plans are personalised, starting with a thorough assessment to identify the root cause of your symptoms. This comprehensive evaluation includes a detailed history, balance testing, and specialised manoeuvres to assess your vestibular system's function.
She treats a variety of vestibular conditions, including:
• BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo): After diagnosing BPPV through positional testing, we use targeted manoeuvres like the Epley or Semont to reposition displaced inner ear crystals, effectively relieving vertigo and improving your balance.
• Vestibular Hypofunction: For patients with reduced inner ear function, Susannah will design exercises that help retrain the brain to compensate for this dysfunction. These exercises improve balance, stability, and reduce dizziness over time.
• 3PD (Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness): She uses a combination of vestibular rehabilitation, cognitive strategies, and relaxation techniques to manage the chronic dizziness and unsteadiness associated with 3PD.
• Vestibular Migraine: She will help you to manage vestibular migraines by identifying your triggers, reducing dizziness, and providing movement retraining and lifestyle modifications to prevent attacks.
Her treatments are tailored to each patient’s specific needs and include progressive home exercises that help reinforce progress and support long-term recovery. Susannah also offers education and continuous support to ensure that you feel confident and safe as you regain your balance and quality of life.
If you're experiencing dizziness or balance issues, her thorough assessment and specialised treatments are designed to help you feel steady again and improve your daily functioning.
MIGRAINE MANAGEMENT
Head pain can be overwhelming, especially if you're caught in a cycle of medication dependency. Susannah specialises in Migraine and Headache management, offering a personalised plan to help you regain control.
Treatment may address factors like posture, ergonomics, and musculoskeletal issues that contribute to your pain.
Her approach focuses on identifying triggers, making lifestyle adjustments, and using preventative strategies to reduce migraine frequency and severity. The aim is to ease immediate discomfort while providing long-term relief, so migraines no longer control your daily life.
SHOCKWAVE
Shockwave therapy is a way of improving blood-flow in some conditions treated by our physios.
Shockwave is useful for when pain is experienced or tightness is felt around a joint, a ligament, or portion of scar tissue from a previous injury or surgery. Restrictions and painful conditions are often because of a problem with blood-flow in the injured areas or the parts of a muscle that feel tightest.
The treatment piece of the shockwave device consists of a small cylinder with a spring-loaded weight inside, which creates pressurised sound waves when the weight strikes the end.
When the treatment giving end of the device is placed against the problem tissues, each vibration creates moderate sized shocks that move beyond the skin and into the deeper circulation. The shocks stimulate the blood-flow to improve the circulation in the problem areas. The stimulus also has effects in the cells of the muscles or ligaments, adding to their capability to generate power or stability. Over its 2-3 minute duration the device can be adjusted so that the sensation is a low level discomfort, disappearing as soon as the treatment is finished.
Your therapist will be able to advise you on whether adding shockwave therapy to your sessions will speed up your rehabilitation in conditions where you feel that your progress is moving slowly.
Muscle tightness due to neurological causes, with stroke as an example, can also benefit from the use of this therapy in its ability to aid muscles in their ability to lengthen. The therapists at North West London are able to tell you more about how shockwave may benefit your recovery.
